Ottawa Movement Community
A shared online home for the undefined but very real community around slacklining, climbing, acro, contact improv, juggling, and every other movement practice in Ottawa.
Why this site
Somewhere between the climbing gym, the slackline in the park, the juggling jam in someone's living room, the acro class on Sunday, and the contact improv night at the community centre — there's a community. It doesn't have a name. It doesn't have a home. But the same faces keep showing up across all of it, because the people drawn to one of these things tend to be drawn to the others too.
I've been part of this scene in Ottawa for years. I slackline. I climb. I juggle. I've ended up at acro jams and contact dance nights and spontaneous outdoor movement sessions that started as one thing and became another. And every time I try to tell a newcomer how to find any of it, I realize how scattered it all is — buried in Facebook groups, Discord servers, Instagram stories, word of mouth, and posters taped to gym walls.
This site is an attempt to give this undefined but very real community a shared home online. A place where someone new to Ottawa, or new to any of these disciplines, can actually find us. A calendar of what's happening this week. A map of where people meet. Short guides to getting started in each thing, written by people who actually do them. Profiles of the humans who make the scene what it is.
I'm not trying to formalize anything or turn this into an organization. The beauty of this community is that it's loose, overlapping, and self-organizing. But loose doesn't have to mean hidden. A single page where someone can land and see that this whole world exists — and that they're welcome in it — is worth building.
If you slackline, climb, juggle, flow, acro, contact improv, parkour, handstand in parks, or do any of the dozen other movement practices that live in this corner of the city, this is for you. And if you've never done any of it but the idea pulls at you — this is especially for you.
What it'll cover
An initial scope
Knowing the community will shape it from here.
- Gyms, parks, and locations for each activity
- Weekly and monthly meetup calendar
- How to get started in each discipline — written by people who actually do them
- Seasonal guides: indoor winter options, summer outdoor spots
- Day trips from Ottawa (Gatineau bouldering, Calabogie, Val-David)
- Interviews and profiles of local practitioners
- Gear and what to bring
Current status
Early days
Collecting data and talking to organizers. The plan is a lightweight static site with a calendar, a submission form so the community can add events, and cross-promotion with the local gyms and groups that already keep this scene alive.
